2020 OLYMPIC SPORTS: MEET THE GAMES-MAKERS
Wushu – from the Mandarin Chinese umbrella term for ‘martial arts’ whose popular equivalent is kung fu – is both a performance and full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. Today, competitive wushu is composed of two disciplines: taolu, performed in routines consisting of patterns and manoeuvers judged according to specific rules, and sanda, a modern fighting method influenced by traditional Chinese boxing. Within the two disciplines are many forms and styles, each of them performed with or without an array of long and short weapons.
